The Gideon Lowe House at 409 William Street was built by the youngest son of one of Key West's earliest Bahamian settlers and is typical of the architecture of the island.
The house, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, sits on a sleepy, shaded street within view of the Gulf harbor and is surrounded by a thirty block historic district of distinctive 19th century buildings.
The oldest section of the house (c. 1845) retains numerous significant architectural details. The newer part of the house (c. 1866) reflects a typical Greek Revival floor plan, but with Victorian embellishments. The scuttles, verandahs, shuttered windows and numerous doors show the Bahamian influence and are features well suited to the tropics.
